Marcellus Merrill

Marcellus arrived in Steamboat Springs by stagecoach in 1904. In 1914, he was among the first students Carl Howelsen taught to jump. He became a partner in the Groswold Ski Company of Denver, where he toyed with the idea of metal skis and patented the first American 3 point binding (for cross-country, jumping, downhill, and slalom). In his honor, the Merrill Trophy has been awarded annually at the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival since 1940.
