As a young man, Carl was one of Norway’s top Nordic skiers. After moving to Colorado in 1904, he was picked up by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus where he performed ski jumping feats earning him the nickname The Flying Norseman. In 1914, he built a ski jump in Steamboat Springs now known as Howelsen Hill. He later organized the first Winter Carnival as a way of celebrating winter sports.
